ALAAP
Listen. Sing. Discover. An evening of music, memories, connection and shared voices.
WHAT IS ALAAP?
Somewhere along the way, many of us stopped singing. Not because we stopped loving music. Perhaps life simply became louder. Work, responsibilities, expectations, self-consciousness, the fear of getting it wrong. But think back.
To school assemblies. To sing with friends. To humming while doing absolutely nothing. To singing in the bathroom, in the car, at family gatherings—or simply when nobody was listening. We sang without wondering whether we were good enough.
Alaap is an invitation to find that voice again.
Alaap is a series of intimate, guided musical evenings where every edition explores a different world of music. One month it could be the monsoon songs of Rabindranath Tagore; another could take us into Christmas carols, rock 'n' roll, country classics, Bengali rock, Gulzar, the Burmans—or any other musical world waiting to be rediscovered.
A theme is announced. The songs are shared. A facilitator gently guides the evening. And then we sing.
You don't have to be a trained singer. You don't need to know music theory. You don't need to perform. You simply need to be willing to sing.
WHY ALAAP?
The word Alaap carries a beautiful duality.
In music, an alaap is an opening—a way of introducing the listener to the mood, character and possibilities of a musical composition.
And that is exactly what we hope Alaap becomes.
An introduction to music. And an introduction to one another.
A room full of strangers can become a room full of voices. Different ages. Different lives. Different stories. But for those few hours, everyone has something in common: a song.
THE JOY OF SINGING TOGETHER
There is something wonderfully human about singing with other people. Research on group singing has found associations with positive mood, social connection and physiological responses linked to stress and bonding. Studies have observed changes involving cortisol and oxytocin, while group singing has also been associated with increased feelings of closeness and faster social bonding between people who did not previously know one another. But perhaps we
We don't always need science to tell us what we already feel.
Sometimes, you just need to sing. To breathe. To listen. To be heard. To laugh when you miss a note. To discover that the stranger sitting beside you knows the same song your mother used to sing. Alaap creates a judgement-free space to participate, explore and reconnect with your own voice. Because singing isn't only about producing sound. It can be about expression. About letting go. About finding courage to use your voice. And sometimes, simply about having a really good evening.
MORE THAN AN EVENING
Alaap is designed as an ongoing musical journey. Each edition introduces you to a new theme, a new collection of songs and perhaps a new way of experiencing music. And if a particular musical form, style or practice speaks to you, the journey doesn't have to end when the evening does.
Selected editions will lead into follow-up sessions, workshops and guided experiences, where facilitators and practitioners can take the exploration deeper. So Alaap becomes more than an event. It becomes a doorway. Listen.
Sing. Discover. Explore further.
AND THEN, THERE IS THE GIVING
We believe that feeling good becomes even more meaningful when that feeling can travel beyond the room. Alaap follows the spirit of #PayItForward. As you enjoy an evening of music, food, conversation and shared voices, a portion of the contribution goes towards social initiatives supported by the Rotary Club of Calcutta Elevates.
These include initiatives and awareness efforts undertaken by Rotary District 3291 which are Life Beyond Cancer, Zero Thalassaemia and Cervical Cancer Awareness, among other community-focused projects.
So while you are having a good evening, someone else may receive a little more support, awareness, opportunity or hope because you chose to be there. You feel good. You do good. And someone, somewhere, gets a little more reason to feel hopeful. That is the Alaap we want to create.
